Fostering care and connection: with Dr Stephen Burrell

Description: Fostering Care and Connection Addressing masculine norms and supporting men and boys
From ending violence and abuse, to addressing men’s mental health, isolation, and suicidality, issues of masculinity are being discussed more widely than ever – sometimes in ways that are exploiting their anxieties and contributing to increasing divisions in society. So how can we break through the noise and offer meaningful support to men and boys who want to lead happy, healthy, connected lives – and help them be the people that they want to be? And how does an understanding of masculine gender norms and men’s role in gender equality help us to do this? We shall discuss with Dr Stephen Burrell, a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Melbourne, and an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Sociology at Durham University, who has been researching men and masculinities for 10+ years, and co-hosts a podcast entitled ‘Now and Men: Current conversations on men’s lives’.

Description: Exploring suicide risk through a therapeutic lens
Working with clients at risk of suicide can challenge even the most experienced practitioner. Knowing how best to hold the safe, therapeutic space and when and how to refer on for more specialist support can be hugely difficult. Fundamentally, therapy can be profoundly helpful for people struggling with suicide and, at times, be life saving.
This session, drawing on the latest practice guidance and evidence, will consider how we can safely talk about suicide, explore it collaboratively with our clients in sessions and work to maintain safe and ethical practices.
